Crispy Chews are a "dried vegetable core" aka Loofah. Most likely produced in India, where loofah or petula is native. As a plant it's prone to nematodes and requires a great deal of pesticide to grow to maturity.
In addition, if this gourd were commercially dried and prepared, it may be covered with a lacquer or clear coat that could possibly be toxic if ingested.
Just wanted to add most gourds get mold on them while drying out. Chinnies are very sensative to mold. Not worth all the things that could possably go wrong.
